In Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘The Adventure of the Norwood Builder’ (1903), Sherlock Holmes not only uses thumbprint evidence to solve a crime but shows Inspector Lestrade that he knows more about fingerprints than the police. Today you don’t have to be a criminal suspect or an immigrant to have your fingerprints read and your identity established: optical and ultrasonic scanners regulate access to all sorts of institutions and make sure your phone responds only to its rightful owner.
